I think that every man has a secret desire to destroy. In some, you can tell the desire is a little stronger. Matt’s parents arrived to help us with our kitchen. Now, for those of you who know Matt’s dad, he is not someone I would consider to have a strong destruction desire. But, I think I was wrong.

So, this crazy guy showed up at our doorstep. A few hours later, this is what was left of our kitchen bar:

Alright, alright. This is not the real story. Yes, he looks crazy in the picture, but he is really a kind and talented man and we were truly blessed that Matt’s parents took time out of their busy lives to come help us with this gigundo project.

Let me bring you up to speed on our kitchen. Once we got into the house and really started looking around, we noticed that the tiles around the sink were a little off. Upon further inspection, we saw that the wood around the sink seemed to be rotting causing the heavy, cast iron sink to slowly sink. There was also leaking below the sink which led to a rotting, mildewy mess in the cabinet. It was so bad that we avoided opening the doors because of the mildew smell and we wouldn’t even think about storing anything under there. We knew that it had to be the first think to go.

So, Matt’s dad was ready to roll when they arrived on Friday. After a quick bite to eat, it was time for the demolition.

The boys made quick work of it. Pulling out the cabinets and tearing out the walls. The rotting turned out to be much worse than we anticipated, so they had to remove the drywall behind the cabinets as well. Although it was a little more work, it does feel so much better to know that the drywall is something we put up and not left over from the people before us.

Next came the removal of the rest of the counters. As you can see in the image below of Matt and his dad taking out the bar, his dad was having a jolly old time destroying our kitchen. Maybe he does have that destructive desire after all…

“Oh no! The wall!”

“That’s ok. We have to take it down anyway.”   (My dreams of a quick and easy counter project fly out the window)

Now, Matt’s dad looks like a super hero:

Matt sure does have a lot to learn! :)

So, this is what I woke up to find on Saturday morning.

Oh sad day. But, it can only go up from here, right?
